Whether he was delivering milk or salting roads, Jim Tevis was a man on the go.

“Nothing stopped Dad from doing what he had to do,” said his daughter, Pam Tevis of Baldwin Borough. “And even on the worst days of winter, when there were few trucks on the road, the merchants in Hazelwood, Greenfield and Squirrel Hill knew that Dad would make his deliveries.”

James H. “Jim” Tevis Sr. of Hazelwood, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, in Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Jefferson Hills. He was 78.

“Dad was not only respected for his honesty and work ethic, but he was also known for his great sense of humor and being a nice guy who enjoyed a good laugh with his customers,” said his daughter. “And the men he worked with through the years trusted him enough to place him in top positions with the Teamsters union.”

Once the Otto Milk Co. closed, Mr. Tevis’ reputation as a driver landed him a job with the Allegheny County Department of Public Works.

“When the call came in late at night or early in the morning, Dad was out of the house and would spend the day salting roads,” his daughter said.

Born and raised in the North Side, Mr. Tevis was a member of Perry High School’s football team. After graduating from high school, he entered the Army and served in Korea. Shortly after he was discharged, Mr. Tevis began his 29-year career with Otto.

It was while making deliveries in Hazelwood that Jim Tevis met Lois Archibold, whom he married in 1959.

“Although Dad had to be out of the house, he was there for us,” said Pam Tevis. “He involved himself in our schoolwork, and we enjoyed the times when Dad and Mom took us to the beach in New Jersey. My parents were also devoted to the Hazelwood Christian Church, and for years they volunteered to help keep it clean.”

In addition to his daughter Pam, Mr. Tevis is survived by his wife, Lois J. Archibald Tevis; children, Jennie Fratangelo of Connellsville, Denise Tevis of Clairton, Jim Tevis Jr. of Munhall and Mike Tevis of Clairton; his sisters, Dolores Zunic of Ross and Carol Schaefer of Butler; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jerry Tevis and Tom Tevis.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today in the Elmer L. Herman Funeral Home, 5204 Second Ave., Hazelwood.

Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Park, Pleasant Hills.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hazelwood Christian Church, 118 Glen Caladh St., Pittsburgh, PA 15207.
