• Murrysville (11-1) posted the high team score in Allegheny Valley Rifle League action last week, downing Kiski (6-7), 1,185-1,167.
Kittanning (11-1) kept pace in the standings by downing Tarentum (2-11), 1,177-1,125. Fort Hand (4-8) and Crowfoot (3-9) did not shoot.
In the B-team standings, Murrysville is on top at 11-1, followed by Kittanning (10-2), Kiski (8-5), Crowfoot (5-7), Fort Hand (2-10), and Tarentum (1-12).
Bob Doverspike of Kittanning fired the week’s top score, a 299. Billy Harvey of Murrysville was high junior with a 297, Jessica Bester of Kittanning was high woman with a 291, and Bob King of Kiski was the high senior with a 284.
• Hempfield Area High School’s rifle team, which returned to shooting .22 rimfire in WPIAL action this year, fell to Woodland Hills in a close match recently.
Woodland Hills fired an 800 with 63 bull’s-eyes, while Hempfield managed a 797 with 57 bull’s-eyes.
Five Hempfield shooters are vying for four available spots in the WPIAL state championship. They are seniors Jessica Metz and Amber Werner, junior Kyle Boronky, and sophomores Zac Schmotzer and Nicki Swartz.

Notices• Penn State entomologist Greg Hoover will give a presentation titled “A Flyfisher’s Entomology: Some Conversations I’ve Overheard in Fly Shops Across the U.S.” at 7 p.m. Monday at the next meeting of the Penn’s Woods West Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Hoover will discuss what a fly fisherman and tier needs to know about important mayflies, accurate identification of key species, their habitat, biology and behavior. • The Yough Outdoors Club will host 12-week basic and intermediate fly-tying workshops beginning Feb. 17. The classes will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and focus on tying various wet flies, nymphs, streamers, terrestrials, dry flies, and more. They will also include one night of casting lessons. The classes are being taught by Paul Yackovich and Scott Loughner. Cost is $50 and includes all tying materials, hands-on instruction time, and educational handouts. Tying materials will be provided, but students need to supply their own vise and tying tools. Proceeds benefit the Yough Outdoors Club, a school-based organization formed to “promote conservation, wise use of resources, environmental stewardship through fishing, hunting and outdoor participation.” Each class is limited to 10 participants.
