Rifle/Trap leagues

» In most years, Frazier-Simplex and Dormont-Mt. Lebanon battle it out for the Pittsburgh and Suburban Rifle League title.

This season, it's Murrysville (5-0) that's in a tie for first place after downing Clymer (1-4), 1,484-1,370. Frazier-Simplex (5-0) beat Green Valley (3-2), 1,462-1,448 and Dormont-Mt. Lebanon beat Irwin Post 228, 1,474-1,379. Allegheny (1-3) had a bye.

Murrysville's Ray Harvey fired a 299, the week's top score. Teammate Bill Harvey was high junior (294), and John Funk was high senior (294). Nikki Kroll of Irwin Post 228 was high lady (286).

Cable restraint classes

» Gilpin Rifles Inc., Armstrong County, 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 19. Class limit 25. Cost is $15. Pre-registration required by Ralph Varrato at 724-448-5341.

» The Penn's Woods West Chapter of Trout Unlimited will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 at Brentwood VFW Post 810. John Hayes will discuss changes to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's "Resource First" philosophy of managing coldwater fisheries. VFW Post 810 is located at 3801 Clairton Blvd. and Marlea Street near the McGinnis Sisters Market. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Shoots on tap

» The Sportsmen's Association of Greensburg hosts trap, skeet and sporting clays tower shoots from 6-10 p.m. Wednesdays. The trap range has a ramp to accommodate special-needs shooters. The club also hosts skeet shoots from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Call 724-423-6350.

» Dunbar Sportsmen's Club will hold a ham and turkey shoot for shotguns and .22s at 1 p.m. today at the clubhouse. Refreshments will be available, and all are welcome.

» Strictly Sticks Traditional Archers will hold a 3-D ham shoot Jan. 17 at East Huntingdon Sportsmen's Club in Alverton for those shooting recurves, longbows and stickbows. Hams will be awarded to the first- and second-place archers. A third ham will be awarded in a random drawing. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost to shoot is $8 for those 17 and older, $4 for those 12-16 and free to those 11 and younger. There will be a beginner's shooting stake at each target. » Ellsworth Sportsmen's Club will hold a turkey shoot Saturday, with registration from noon to 4 p.m. The club's trap range is open Fridays at 7 p.m. for league and practice shooting. The club itself opens at 6 p.m. Fridays, with food and drinks available for purchase. The public is welcome to use the lighted range; cost is $5 per round and $4 per round for practice. » Fort Hand Rifle Club holds an ARA-sanctioned smallbore benchrest shoot on the second Saturday of every month. The club also hosts an NRA-sanctioned smallbore metallic silhouette match on the second Sunday of every month. Call 724-726-9580.

Lebanon Sportsmen's Club holds outdoor civilian marksmanship program shoots at 11 a.m. the third Sunday of every month, with sign-ups and a safety orientation beginning at 9:30; outdoor pistol, NMC and MPRL shoots at 6 p.m. Mondays; five-stand shoots are held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. the first and third Sundays of the month; trap shoots are held from 7-10 p.m. Tuesdays; there's a Tres Bandidos shoot at 6 p.m. the fifth Wednesday. » East Monongahela Sportsmen's Club holds 25-yard pin shoots at 6:30 p.m. Mondays; cost is $6. On Thursdays, the club runs trap shoots for $2.50 per round and 50-yard pin shoots on the pistol range for $6; both events start at 6:30 p.m. All events are open to the public. Call 412-384-4747.

» East Huntingdon Sportsman's Club's indoor archery league will begin practice Dec. 14. Sessions will be held at 7 p.m. Mondays. Club membership is not required to shoot.
