Rifle/Trap leagues

» Murrysville (7-0) remains unbeaten in the Allegheny Valley Rifle League A-team standings, having beaten Tarentum (2-5) 1185-1138.Kittanning (6-1) stayed right behind in the standings, though, by downing Crowfoot (1-6) 1181-1163. Kiski (5-2) eked out a win over Fort Hand (0-7) 1169-1167.In the B-team standings, Murrysville and Kittanning are on top at 6-1, followed by Kiski (5-2), Crowfoot (3-4), Tarentum (1-6) and Fort Hand (0-7).Junior shooter Bill Harvey of Murrysville shot a perfect 300 to record the week's top score. Bob Doverspike of Kittanning was the top senior with a 294, while Jessica Bester of Kittanning was the top female with a 291.

» The Ken Sink Chapter of Trout Unlimited will offer two fly tying classes on Saturdays beginning Jan. 9 at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 398 Church St. in Indiana. The first, "An Introduction to Fly Tying for Beginners," will be held at 10 a.m. This seven-week program is designed for those new to the hobby as well as for those with limited skills. The second, "Intermediate Fly Tying," is designed for those who already know the basics of fly tying but would like to advance their skills. Sessions for this six-week program will be held at 1 p.m. Cost for each program is $25 and includes tying and instructional materials. Participants must provide their own tools, including thread. Exceptions can be made in case of hardship. Individuals younger than 16 can attend for free, though those younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult. In case of financial hardship no fee will be required and tools will be provided for use during the course. » Tri-County Trout Club will hold its annual sport show and flea market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 16 at Burrell Park Lake's Fisher Hall. The show, which is open to the public, is designed to sell any sporting related items, new or used, including fishing, hunting, camping or sports equipment, books, magazines, videos and/or clothing. Bamboo rod seller and builder Ron Bennett will have vintage bamboo rods and tackle for sale, in addition to rods that he has built, too. He will also appraise rods. Tables are available for $5. » The Sportsmen's Association of Greensburg hosts trap, skeet and sporting clays tower shoots from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays. The trap range has a ramp to accommodate special-needs shooters. The club also hosts skeet shoots from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Call 724-423-6350.

» Dunbar Sportsmen's Club will hold a ham and turkey shoot for shotguns and .22s at 1 p.m. today at the clubhouse. Refreshments will be available and all are welcome.

» Kingston Veterans and Sportsmen's Club, located just off Route 217 in Latrobe, will hold a 3-D archery shoot Jan. 17, with registration from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration will take place at the clubhouse. Prizes will be awarded and their will be a Kingston Loyalty Shooter door prize. Refreshments will be available. Call 724-539-9303.

» Strictly Sticks Traditional Archers will hold a 3-D ham shoot Jan. 17 at East Huntingdon Sportsmen's Club in Alverton for those shooting recurves, longbows and stickbows. Hams will be awarded to the first and second place archers. A third ham will be awarded in a random drawing. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost to shoot is $8 for those 17 and older, $4 for those 12 to 16 and free to those 11 and younger. There will be a beginner's shooting stake at each target. » Ellsworth Sportsmen's Club's trap range is open Fridays at 7 p.m. for league and practice shooting. The club itself opens at 6 p.m. on Fridays, with food and drinks available for purchase.
