• Ed Callahan, district forester for Forbes State Forest, will discuss the Forbes and opportunities to fish on it at the next meeting of the Forbes Trail Chapter of Trout Unlimited, set for 7 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Winnie Palmer Nature Center on the campus of St. Vincent College. The meeting is open to the public.

• The January meeting of the Ken Sink Chapter of Trout Unlimited will feature a special presentation by Pennsylvania fly fishing guide and author Mike Heck. Heck's presentation, "A Spring Creek Round-up," will cover some of Pennsylvania's famous limestone streams like the Little Juniata as well as some lesser known waters. Also included in the evening's program will be a fly tying demonstration of effective spring creek patterns and a signing of Heck's book, "Spring Creek Strategies." The free program begins at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Elks Lodge at 475 South 13th St. in Indiana. The public is invited.

• The Western Allegheny Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society will hold its 19th annual sportsmen's banquet Feb. 5 at Four Points Sheraton in Greensburg. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for a reception, with dinner at 7:30. The event will feature live and silent auctions, games, drawings, door prizes and more. Individual membership and dinner tickets are $55; family membership packages and sponsor packages are available, too. Shoots on tap

• The Sportsmen's Association of Greensburg hosts trap, skeet and sporting clays tower shoots from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays. The trap range has a ramp to accommodate special-needs shooters. The club also hosts skeet shoots from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Call 724-423-6350.

• Kingston Veterans and Sportsmen's Club, located just off Route 217 in Latrobe, will hold a 3-D archery shoot Jan. 17, with registration from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration will take place at the clubhouse. Prizes will be awarded and their will be a Kingston Loyalty Shooter door prize. Refreshments will be available. Call 724-539-9303.

• Strictly Sticks Traditional Archers will hold a 3-D ham shoot Jan. 17 at East Huntingdon Sportsmen's Club in Alverton for those shooting recurves, longbows and stickbows. Hams will be awarded to the first and second place archers. A third ham will be awarded in a random drawing. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost to shoot is $8 for those 17 and older, $4 for those 12 to 16 and free to those 11 and younger. There will be a beginner's shooting stake at each target. • Saltsburg Sportsmen's Club will hold a 3-D archery shoot Feb. 7, with registration from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for youths and free to cubs. There will be McKenzie and Reinhart targets and awards in all classes. Refreshments will be available. Call 724-639-0360.

• Ellsworth Sportsmen's Club's trap range is open Fridays at 7 p.m. for league and practice shooting. The club itself opens at 6 p.m. on Fridays, with food and drinks available for purchase. The public is welcome to use the lighted range; cost is $5 per round and $4 per round for practice. The club's fall trap league begins Sept. 4 and all are welcome to join. • East Monongahela Sportsmen's Club holds 25-yard pin shoots at 6:30 p.m. Mondays; cost is $6. On Thursdays, the club runs trap shoots for $2.50 per round and 50-yard pin shoots on the pistol range for $6; both events start at 6:30 p.m. All events are open to the public. Call 412-384-4747.
