Mom’s strength, generosity grew from deep faith
For decades, Virginia Beswick labored under an edict hanging on a kitchen wall.
“Put your hands to work and your hearts to God,” said her daughter, Kathy Schultz, of Murrysville. “That was Mom. Her faith upheld her to the very last day of her life.”
Virginia T. Beswick of North Versailles died on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, in Cedars of Monroeville. She was 96.
Family came first for Mrs. Beswick, but community was a close second. In 1971, she co-founded the area’s first Meals on Wheels program, devoting more than 40 years to filling the hearts and homes of community folk with cooking as warm as the woman who delivered the meals.
“She prided herself on helping others right in her own neighborhood,” Schultz said. “It was a community effort to help the people next door who needed it.”
Mrs. Beswick was the last living charter member of Linway United Presbyterian Church in North Versailles, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a Bible school and prayer circle leader.
She and her husband, the late Charles L. Beswick Sr., believed in earning their good fortune but never hesitated to help family and friends. When Mr. Beswick died in 1988, his small, outspoken wife carried on.
“She went straight ahead through all of it,” Schultz said, remembering her mother’s struggle with breast cancer, many years past. “It was a lesson to watch that, a wonderful witness to watch her kind of strength.”
In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Beswick is survived by a son, Charles L. Beswick Jr. of Sewickley; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Beswick was preceded in death by a son, Thomas G. Beswick, and a sister, Ruth Stark.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Christ Lutheran Church, 5330 Logan Ferry Road, Murrysville. Interment to follow in Brush Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that people contribute in Mrs. Beswick’s name to Meals on Wheels of North Versailles.
