Official: Women not told of larger sizing

As women have been becoming larger, so have dress sizes, but women have not been told that, according to a Scottish health official.

Dr. Mac Armstrong, Scotland's chief medical officer, said some women are ignoring expanding waistlines and not addressing their weight because clothing manufacturers have increased the measurements for dress sizes without changing the sizes, the Daily Record reported Monday.

A woman dress size 10 bought in stores today is much larger than the same size purchased a decade ago, according to Armstrong.

"More than half of the population is now overweight and so the perception of what is normal has changed," Armstrong said. "Clothes have been getting larger."

However, Terry Tavner, editor of She magazine in Scotland, said women knew about the size difference.

"Sizes might be getting bigger, but intelligent women won't be hoodwinked by a more generous waistband," Tavner said.
