Officials: Mexican miners appeared doomed

Chances of rescuing any of the workers trapped in a collapsed Mexican mine shaft is dim, said mine officials Friday.

An evaluation of the air quality and quantity in the area around the collapse showed there was not enough oxygen to sustain life since the shaft collapsed in an explosion on Sunday, El Universal newspaper reported.

The miners were trapped Sunday nearly 1,000 feet below ground at a mine about 85 miles from the Texas-Mexico border.

A dozen rescued miners were taken to a nearby hospital and treated for burns and broken bones.
