OffOnOff plugs into jazz rock

Despite making music of obvious complexity and instinctive power, there's something compellingly simple to the avant-garde, jazz-rock power trio OffOnOff.

Maybe it's just the binary-like simplicity of the name, but OffOnOff doesn't noodle around -- they just barrel right at you with punishing waves of sound, exhibiting the kind of in-the-moment creative destruction of which only master improvisers are capable.

The band features the slashing, unpredictable guitar of Terrie Ex, of the Dutch postpunk group the Ex, atop explosive rhythms by bassist Massimo Pupillo, of Italy's noise-metal gurus Zu, and Norwegian avant-jazz drummer Paal Nilssen-Love.

OffOnOff will be at Garfield Artworks in Garfield on Monday. The show starts at 8 p.m. with Pittsburgh's own Dave Bernabo & Assembly. Tickets are $8, or $10 at the door. Details: 412-361-2262.
