Ohio billboard warns Amish of scam
Geauga County, Ohio, officials have erected a billboard warning Amish people to "be skeptical of door-to-door mortgage salesmen."
The Geauga Department of Community and Economic Development said the billboard comes in response to numerous complaints about a broker's practices in the Amish community, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Saturday.
Anita Stocker, who oversees the county department, said the billboard, which features just 73 words, is scheduled to stay up until the end of September, just east of Ohio Highway 528.
"We want this issue talked about," said Stocker, whose group spent nearly $1,000 for the sign.
"The Amish can be too trusting at times. Sometimes, you need to ask questions . . . for your own protection."
