The state Department of Environmental Protection is investigating what caused a light, oily sheen to appear on the Monongahela River Sunday morning near Dravosburg.
Spokesman John Poister said the sheen was reported about 7 a.m. in the vicinity of the Dravosburg Bridge and spread for about a mile downriver before it started breaking up around noon. It was unknown exactly what the substance was or where it came from, but it appeared to be a spill of about 36 gallons, he said.
Pennsylvania American Water has an intake for drinking water on the Mon, and sent water quality personnel to investigate. Floating booms helped contain the substance until it broke up, and it did not approach any water intakes, said Penn American spokeswoman Josephine Posti.
