Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato today launched a nonprofit to help fund improvements at the county's nine regional parks.

The county will match dollar-for-dollar donations that the Allegheny County Parks Foundation collects from other foundations and donors, Onorato said. The group's goal• To tackle some of the $60 million to $80 million in deferred maintenance needed at county-owned parks.

The group also will send out requests for proposals to invite developers and entrepreneurs to help run businesses or provide services at county parks. Onorato and County Council have the final say on those developments.

The county will kick-start the group with a $1 million donation, Onorato said. Onorato will appoint board members to the foundation in the next 30 days. The hiring of an executive director will follow.
