Open house set at Sony plant
The closed Sony Technology Center near New Stanton will be on display June 22 in a huge “open house” for as many as 130 real estate representatives — an opportunity for Pittsburgh area developers, brokers and agents to tour the plant and see how it can be reused.
The former television manufacturing plant, which straddles the Mt. Pleasant and Hempfield borders in East Huntingdon, closed in the spring. It has 2.3 million square feet that could be available for rent immediately, even though Sony’s lease does not expire until October, said Jason Rigone, deputy director of the Westmoreland County Industrial Development Corp.
The industrial development agency, which is co-sponsoring the open house with the Regional Industrial Development Corp. in Pittsburgh, is seeking multiple tenants to occupy the space, Rigone said.
“We’re trying to get the information out. It will give us the opportunity to showcase the space at the Sony plant,” so real estate agents can see the highway access from the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the four-lane Route 119, and access to rail yards and understand the layout of the interior space, he said.
If a broker has a tenant interested in moving into the facility now, that probably would take a few months to get the space divided for a company, Rigone said.
The plant has two tenants who occupy about 500,000 square feet of space. Solar Power Industries Inc. of Rostraver manufactures silicon ingots for solar power products, and Dai Nippon Printing IMSA makes thermal transfer ink ribbons for barcodes.
Thursday, the WIDC approved an agreement with the RIDC’s Regional Growth Fund to settle responsibilities of each agency for managing the property, and set rules for maintaining, operating and developing the site.
