Oracle Corp. said it filed a copyright-infringement lawsuit against Google Inc., alleging that the Internet search giant infringed on intellectual property related to the Java software that Oracle acquired when it purchased Sun Microsystems Inc.
Oracle said in a statement that Google infringed on its Java-related intellectual property with the development of the Android mobile operating system software.
"In developing Android, Google knowingly, directly and repeatedly infringed Oracle's Java-related intellectual property," Oracle spokesperson Karen Tillman said.
A Google spokesman declined to comment.
Oracle obtained Java as part of its $5.6 billion purchase of Sun, which closed earlier this year following a lengthy antitrust review in Europe.
"Java is the single most important software we've ever acquired," Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison said when the acquisition was announced last year.
