OSHA sets $300,000 fine against North Side post office

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration set fines of nearly $300,000 against the U.S. Postal Service for electrical hazards found at its main Pittsburgh facility.

OSHA said the post office violations represented "blatant disregard for workplace safety standards" at the central mail processing facility on California Avenue on the North Side.

The most serious of the seven violations involved the use of an unapproved junction box in a wet and damp location, and failure to use approved junction-box covers, a repeat violation, said the agency, explaining the $299,500 proposed fine.

The local post office will "review OSHA's concerns and make necessary adjustments," said spokesmen Tad Kelley in a statement. The post office has 15 days to pay the fine, meet with OSHA to resolve it, or to contest it.

OSHA said no injuries had occurred as a result of the hazards.
