Rifle/trap leagues

  • Under pressure from Ruffs Dale in recent weeks, the shooters from Connellsville responded to the pressure by picking up a win on their home range in Twi-Night Trap League action Thursday.

    Connellsville shot a 198 to edge Ruffsdale, which shot 196. East Huntingdon was close behind with a 195 and Youngwood fired a 186.

    On the season, Connellsville remains in first place with 35 points, followed by Ruffsdale with 32 1/2, East Huntingdon with 21 1/2 and Youngwood with 11.

    Last week's top shooters were:

  • Connellsville: Jouke deVries, Roy Davis, Frank Capo, Barry Firestone, Tom Kaylor, and Jon Schroyer, 25; Blaine Wingard and Bob Baer, 24.

    Events/classes

  • Volunteers are needed for the 16th Annual River Sweep, the largest organized volunteer river cleanup effort in the country. It's scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to noon June 18 in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland counties.

    The emphasis this year locally is on cleaning the rivers prior to the Bassmaster Classic coming to Pittsburgh.

    Last year, more than 1,000 volunteers collected trash and debris along the Ohio, Allegheny, Beaver, Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers and their tributaries. Volunteers who participate receive trash bags, a T-shirt and refreshments.

  • Keystone State Park, Loyalhanna Bassmasters and Latrobe-Unity Parks and recreation will host a day's worth of family fishing activities beginning at 9 a.m. June 5 at the park.

    There will be a free catch-and-release fishing derby for children and adults from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with prizes awarded in various age classes. Anglers must register at the park's amphitheater between 9 and 11 a.m., then weigh-in their fish at the same site by 1:15 p.m.

    There will also be a free CastingKids Competition from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children in two age groups (7-10 and 11-14) can compete to see who can most accurately flip, pitch and cast a lure. There will be prizes for the winners, each of whom earns the right to advance to state competition.

    There will be a "Smart Angler's Class" from 10 a.m. to noon, too, focusing on fishing skills and aquatic resources. Pre-registration, which costs $3, is required by calling 724-668-2939.

  • White Oak Rod and Gun Club will host an NRA Youth Sportsfest for boys and girls ages 10 to 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 18 at the club grounds in North Huntingdon.

    Participants will get to try their hands at shotgun, .22 rifle, .22 handgun, high-powered rifle, air rifle, archery, and muzzleloader shooting. There will be a seminar on turkey hunting safety, too, along with one presented by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

    The event will be limited to 60 participants. Registration costs $10 and will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis until June 13. Lunch and all equipment will be provided.

  • Irwin Sportsmen's Association will hold an NRA hunter's pistol and cowboy rifle silhouette shoot June 4, with registration from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Call Bruce Lumsden at 412-613-5775. The club will hold a revolver/semi-automatic smallbore and centerfire action pistol shoot at 5 p.m. June 2. Call 724-863-1967.

  • The second annual Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation sporting clays shoot will be held June 8-9 at the Shooting Academy at Nemacolin Woodlands in Farmington. All proceeds benefit Burton's foundation and its mission to promote an awareness of the need for wildlife conservation, habitat enhancement and proper stewardship of natural resources through education. Participants will be able to meet Burton as well as NASCAR drivers Kyle Petty, Greg Biffle, Casey Mears and Jeff Burton. Several former Pittsburgh Steelers will also participate, as will Shawn Chatham, host or Chasing the Dream on the Outdoor Channel.   • Lloydsville Sportsmen's Club will hold a 3-D archery shoot June 26, with registration from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $8 and refreshments will be available.

  • Rostraver Sportsmen and Conservation Association holds trap practice at 10 a.m. Thursdays and 1 p.m. Saturdays. A 3-D archery shoot schedule is available by calling 724-872-4399.

  • The Sigel Sportsmen's Club will hold a 3-D archery shoot June 5, with registration from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The club is located one half mile north of Sigel on Route 949.

  • Mars Rod and Gun Club will hold a 30-target western/Canadian game 3-D archery shoot June 12, with registration from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Refreshments will be available. Cost is $8 for adults and $7 for youths ages 12 to 15. Those 11 and younger shoot for free. Call 724-538-9392.

  • Old Westmoreland Rifles is hosting a blackpowder shoot June 19 beginning at 1 p.m. There will be a paper target shoot at 10 a.m. June 5.   • West Penn Sportsmen's Club has a heated, covered, and lighted five stand range. Shooting hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays. The trap ranges are open 4:30 to 9 p.m. Thursdays.

  • East Monongahela Sportsmen's Club will hold a 40-target 3-D archery shoot, with six tree stand shots, June 5, with registration from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a high-power shoot June 25 beginning at 9 a.m. The club holds 25-yard pistol pin shoots Mondays at 6:30 and 25-yard pistol pin and 50-yard silhouette shoots Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Trap practice is Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. All events are open to the public.
