The Redesign Team of Amy Ross, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, and Beth Sammarone had the opportunity to help create and design new spaces for lucky families in Pennsylvania who won a “Techno Makeover” through the new reality makeover show called “My Home 2.0.” Fox’s answer to “Extreme Makeover — Home Edition” is sponsored through Verizon FiOS (FiberOptic Systems). The families get whole-house upgrade cable, phone and computer service that also includes flat screen TVs and computers that also double as TVs. The interior designers’ job was to enhance the rooms into which all of this was going. Ross and Sammarone did two homes in the Pittsburgh area which included a basement media room designed for the husband of the house, that the wife can also enjoy, along with a home office, kids’ computer and gaming area and a special “hidden” room. In the second home, they created a home theater room, computer station room, organized the adjacent laundry room and redesigned the upstairs family room to create a home office for mom and daughter with autism. “It was a great experience, yet stressful at times,” Ross said. “It helps to have a great team.” “It makes you have a new appreciation for what happens behind the scenes on the TV makeover shows,” Sammarone added. The families were then guests of honor at an outdoor block party which included their families, friends and all their neighbors with food, games and gadget giveaways. The family was then led in by the “Techno Gurus,” hosts of the show, for the big reveal, in which the block party could see the action outside on the jumbotron. “Our team, along with the crew, were pulling all-nighters to get the job done,” Ross said. “To work around a TV crew when we are so used to “working our magic” by ourselves, proved challenging, but everyone was blown away the next day by the end result.” Unfortunately they’re not allowed to post any before and after photos on their own Web site until the shows air. The first episode recently aired in the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia area, where Verizon FiOs is available, and subsequent episodes will follow in the weeks to come — The Redesign Team’s episodes will show sometime around Christmas.
