It's official: The first-year Pittsburgh Passion women's pro football team will be playing its home games at Jim Weir Stadium in Rostraver Township this season.

The Passion's Mid-Atlantic Division opener in the National Women's Football Association is scheduled April 12 against the defending division champion Baltimore Burn.

The Burn went 7-2 last year including a 21-20 loss to the Philadelphia Liberty Belles in the playoff quarterfinals. The Baltimore team allowed only 15 points in eight Mid-Atlantic Division contests.

The Burn feature two of the league's bigger players in 6-1, 318 pound nose guard Sherice Smaw and 6-2, 300 pound Tarsha Fain.

The Passion are one of nine new entries in the three-year-old 30-team league. The other newcomers are the Erie Illusion, Rochester Raptors, Columbus Flames, Toledo Spitfire, Junction City Cavalry, St. Louis Slam, Kansas City Krunch and the Oklahoma City Lightning.

The Passion will practice at Jim Weir Stadium tonight and Friday with a scrimmage scheduled Saturday at 2 p.m. with the D.C. Divas.

One of the players on the Passion's roster is Bunny Dorsett, niece of former Pitt and Dallas Cowboy great Tony Dorsett.

  • Otis Tisdale will be Michael Moorer's next ring opponent.

Moorer (43-3-1) will fight Tisdale (20-9-1) Saturday, March 29, at the Coconut Creek Seminole Indian Casino in Coconut Creek, Fla.

  • Belle Vernon Area High will have a new boys' track coach with Eric Fuller replacing Jesse Cramer, who stepped down to devote more time to his job as the Leps' grid mentor.

Fuller had guided the Lady Leps' track team.

Heather Kristen, who assisted Fuller, will take over the girls' program

Speaking of track, the second Mon Valley Classic is scheduled for Monday, April 28, at Ringgold Stadium.

Charleroi, Monessen, Belle Vernon Area, Brownsville, Beth-Center and host Ringgold will be represented, while Elizabeth Forward may also be in the field.

Brownsville's boys and Charleroi's girls are the defending team champions.

  • In case you missed it, Bob Gumbita has stepped down as Bentworth High's football coach after two seasons. Gumbita went 4-14 including 1-8 in 2002.

  • The last basketball game for Gerria Ballard, whose older brother Gerrmar plays at California University, proved to be memorable.

A 5-7 senior at Valley, Ballard was named the MVP in the Cager Classic at Highlands High after scoring 17 points in the East's 71-55 win over the West.

Ballard is headed to Duquesne University where she'll major in pharmacy.

  • And thanks to Dan Douylliez of Charleroi who says the best things in life are free. It's the worst things that are so expensive!
