Patient’s gun fires in central Pa. emergency room

DANVILLE — The state health department wants a thorough review after a patient’s gun fired as he was being treated in the emergency room at a central Pennsylvania hospital. The bullet entered the top of a wall and no one was hit.

A spokesman for Geisinger Medical Center in Danville says it happened around 8 p.m. Thursday as the man was being turned by ER staff inside a trauma bay. The (Bloomsburg) Press Enterprise the spokesman, Mike Ferlazzo, says a handgun fell out of the patient’s pocket and fired.

Police say the patient had a permit for that gun and that they don’t consider it a criminal matter.

Holli Senior, a spokeswoman for the state health department, says Geisinger needs to conduct a thorough review of the incident to determine if corrective action is needed.
