After being referred to as a disaster, it appears this year's road repaving project in McCandless will be completed.
Town officials said in early September they were concerned that the 20 roads scheduled for repaving this summer would not be completed because of unexpected problems.
Mark Sabina, the town's superintendent of public works, however, said that since then the project has "progressed remarkably well."
Town officials earlier this year voted to spend $1.2 million to hire the Bridgeville-based Russell Standard to pave portions of 20 roads — about 7 1 / 4 miles.
Russell Standard crews were expected to complete the work today by paving Arcadia Drive, which is the final road that needs to be done, Sabina said. The work was to be completed by Sept. 30, but Russell Standard workers ran into trouble when they started work on Regency and Oxbridge drives. When a crew dug into those roads, they found there was no 12-inch base of stone under the paved portion of the road. Instead, there was only topsoil, and a stone base needed to be added.
In order to add the proper stone base, crews had to work in the area longer than expected.
Because Russell Standard did not complete the road project by the Sept. 30 deadline, the town has the option to fine the company $500 a day for each road that was not completed on time.
In light of the unexpected problem on Regency and Oxbridge drives, however, Sabina said town officials will not fine the company.
