Pemex workers march for higher salaries

Members of the Syndicate of Mexican Oil Workers marched Monday in Mexico City, demanding a salary raise of 4.5 percent, according to labor leaders.

The employees of the state oil monopoly Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, were demanding an increase in their wages they say they should have been paid Aug. 14 under terms of their contract.

Union officials say the workers decided to protest as a means of pressuring Pemex officials to honor their contractual agreements.

The syndicate says some 90,000 Pemex workers should have received the wage increase,
