The Penguins also acquired a defenseman and goaltender before the 3 p.m. trading deadline.

Defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski, 29, was obtained from the Florida Panthers for a fourth-round pick in the 2007 draft. Goaltender Nolan Schaefer, 27, was acquired from the San Jose Sharks for a seventh-round draft pick. Schaefer was immediately assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Kwiatkowski, in his sixth NHL season, had five goals and five assists in 41 games with the Panthers. He previously played for the Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals.

Schaefer's only NHL experience, consisting of seven games, came with the Sharks in the 2005-06 season.
