Penn State pounds Lehigh
UNIVERSITY PARK — Talor Battle scored 21 points, David Jackson added 14 and Penn State used a big second-half spurt Friday to overcome an early 10-point deficit and defeat Lehigh 70-56 in the season opener.
The Nittany Lions (1-0) outscored the Mountain Hawks, 49-29, in the second half, sparked by Jackson’s 13 after halftime and a dunk by Jeff Brooks with seven-plus minutes left for a 13-point lead.
Freshman Anthony D’Orazio scored 17 for Lehigh (0-1), and Penn State held returning Patriot League Player of the Year C.J. McCullom to only seven.
Battle, who hit a first-half buzzer-beating 3 to bring Penn State within six, hit another 3 from the corner with 15 minutes left to tie the game, 33-33.
â¢ No. 11 West Virginia 80, Loyola (Md.) 49 — In Morgantown, W.Va., Liz Rapella (18) and Madina Ali (17) both scored in double figures to lead West Virginia (1-0) past Loyola (0-1).
The Mountaineers forced 33 turnovers.
â¢ Penn State 112, Dayton 107 (2OT) — In Dayton, Ohio, Zhaque Gray scored 27 points, and Alex Bentley added 26 to lead Penn State (1-0).
Justine Raterman scored a game-high 32 points for Dayton (0-1).
â¢ Duquesne 70, Lehigh 65 — In Pittsburgh, Orsi Szecsi led Duquesne (1-0) with 19 points.
Erica Prosser (Oakland Catholic) scored a game-high 24 points for Lehigh (0-1), which had 30 turnovers.
