Penn State defensive tackle Ed Johnson has been suspended for violating a team rule and will miss the Outback Bowl.

School officials did not disclose details of the violation Tuesday, but the infraction was part of a set of team rules that are "within the family and players know and are fully aware of them," said Guido D'Elia, football marketing and communications director.

Johnson, a senior, had started all 12 regular-season games this year. He was tied for third on the squad with five sacks, and combined with fellow tackle Jay Alford to provide the Nittany Lions with a solid presence up the middle.

Johnson will not travel with the team to Tampa, Fla., for the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1 against No. 17 Tennessee. Senior Steve Roach or freshman Phil Taylor could take his spot in the starting lineup.
