A Penn Township bridge has been closed because of safety concerns.

A routine inspection determined the bridge on Boquet Road needed to be closed for further inspection with traffic detoured until further notice.

"Our bridge inspectors said there were some problems underneath the bridge where the piers are. Underneath one of the concrete supports they (saw) a problem," said Jay Ofsanik, PennDOT spokesman. "Their concerns were enough they felt it needed to be closed to ensure public safety."

The bridge spans a branch of Brush Run and is in the community of Boquet, between Camelot Lane and Ader Road. Bruce Light, Penn Township manager, said PennDOT informed him work will take place on the structure with the hope the bridge will reopen next week.

"The concrete bridge was heavily scoured underneath and the abutments were basically hanging in mid-air," Light said. "Their plans are to put some forms around the areas that are scoured and put some concrete in. They hope to be able to have this done next week."

Light said the bridge is scheduled for replacement some time next year.
