Construction on the kitchen and locker rooms at Penn-Trafford High School is underway.
Superintendent Scott Inglese provided an update last week on work at the high school.
The kitchen project has necessitated setup of a temporary serving area while construction continues through the remainder of the school year. Students will have a limited menu of options while work continues.
Inglese said no problems were reported.
“I think we'll be fine for the rest of the year with the temporary serving lines,” Inglese said.
The pool and locker room area also are set for improvements. Inglese said work will begin as swimming season comes to an end.
A new video room is complete, and students have started using the area.
“We're excited about getting that room and that whole program moving forward,” Inglese said.
The fitness center has reopened and work on the resurfaced gym floor is expected to be finished sometime this week, Inglese said.
Project architect Hank Tkacik said the district will save nearly $3,000 from adjustments to the project, and project manager Renee Batronis said crews tested material found in the ceiling of the kitchen area for asbestos but those test came back negative.
About $320,000 is left in the project's contingency fund with about five months of work remaining.
The district will not have to dip into any contingency funds this month for change orders.
Inglese said he is hopeful that the kitchen and locker room work won't reveal any unexpected expenses.
“That is an area we think, some high risk is there,” Inglese said. “Hopefully we don't run into too many problems.”
The $32 million renovation project is scheduled for completion before the start of the 2016-17 school year.
