U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Forest Hills, said during a congressional hearing Wednesday that a federal agency should be created to ensure companies such as Facebook protect users' personal data.

“In my mind, the only way we're going to close this trust gap is through legislation that creates and empowers a sufficiently resourced expert oversight agency with rulemaking authority to protect the digital privacy and ensure that companies protect our users' data,” Doyle said.

In an interview after the hearing, Doyle said the Cambridge Analytica breach shows that “self-regulation hasn't worked.”
