Ex-Penn State officials to serve jail time from Sandusky scandal

HARRISBURG — Former Penn State President Graham Spanier was sentenced Friday to four to 12 months of incarceration - including two months in jail - on a charge of child endangerment after failing to report a 2001 allegation about Jerry Sandusky to authorities in a child sex abuse scandal that first broke more than five years ago.
Prosecutors sought jail time for Spanier, 68, with sentencing guidelines calling for up to a year in prison. His lawyers pushed for probation.
Spanier, who was convicted at a jury trial, has said he plans to appeal.
Former athletic director Tim Curley, 63, and former vice president Gary Schultz, 67, each pleaded guilty to child endangerment. Curley was sentenced to seven to 23 months in prison, and Schultz was sentenced to six to 23 months of prison.

On Friday, each apologized to the abuse victims while awaiting sentencing. "I am very remorseful I did not comprehend the severity of the situation. I sincerely apologize to the victims and to all who were impacted because of my mistake," Curley said. "I sincerely apologize for not having done more." Schultz said, "It really sickens me to think I might have played a part in children being hurt. I'm sorry that I didn't do more, and I apologize to the victims." Prosecutors say the men hushed up an allegation about Sandusky sexually abusing a boy in a football team shower in 2001 to protect the university's reputation. As a result, they said, the former assistant football coach went on to victimize more boys. All three men denied they were told the encounter in the shower was sexual in nature.
