Newsmaker: Jacqueline Coplen
Noteworthy: Finalist for a Rhodes Scholarship, a prestigious international fellowship that pays for American students to pursue a degree at the University of Oxford in England.
Residence: Allegheny College in Meadville, from Carlisle
Family: Mother, Lorelai, father, Rick, both retired Army officers now working for the Army in civilian positions. Sister, Michaela Coplen, a freshman at Vassar College.
Background: Coplen is a cadet in the ROTC program at Edinboro College and maintains a near-perfect GPA at Allegheny College, according to the school. She has won several leadership and academic awards and works as a seasonal horseback riding instructor on her family’s farm. If she wins the scholarship she hopes to study philosophy at Oxford and use her degree to pursue a career as an Army lawyer, possibly as a special victims counsel.
Education: Senior, political science and Spanish double major at Allegheny College, graduated from Carlisle High School.
