Pennsylvania companies mining more coal

Pennsylvania coal companies continued to mine more coal in 2017 than they did in 2016, according to the Energy Information Administration’s weekly coal production report.

The year-to-date bituminous coal production was 36.1 million short tons as of Sept. 16, a 20.2 percent increase over the Sept. 16, 2016, total of 30.1 million short tons.

Production in the Eastern Pennsylvania anthracite fields was up 8.9 percent at 1.3 million tons as of Sept. 16 compared to 1.1 million in 2016.

National coal production for the year was 564 million short tons as of last week, a 13.2 percent increase over the same period in 2016.
