Coal production in Pennsylvania continues to exceed last year’s numbers, according to the Energy Information Administration’s weekly coal production report.

Through Sept. 23, coal companies had mined 37.1 million short tons of bituminous coal and 1.3 million tons of anthracite in the state’s coal fields. That’s a 19.9 percent increase for bituminous coal and an 8.7 percent increase for anthracite when compared to how much was mined by Sept. 23, 2016, according to the agency.

National coal production is up 12.7 percent over the year with the total so far in 2017 at 578.3 million short tons.
