Drummer George Heid III says he was so surrounded by talented people as a child, he didn’t realize musical talent wasn’t a universal attribute until he was 7 or 8.
“We’d get together, and everybody was sitting around playing,” he says. “Plus, I lived in a (recording) studio, so music was always around.”
Son of the like-named album producer, Heid is in the early stages of shaping his professional career. He says he started showing some interest in percussion when he was 3, and his father bought him a drumset when he was 10.
A member of the up-and-coming Elevations, the band with trumpeter Benny Benack III, Heid also is considering going to China for six months to perform with his uncle, organist Bill Heid.
Heid, 23, from Aspinwall, attended Fox Chapel Area High School and Pittsburgh’s Creative and Performing Arts School, Downtown, before doing some work at the State University of New York’s Purchase campus and Duquesne University.
He works in a number of gigs in this area. But Elevations is his highest call right now, he says, adding he is proud the band recently put together its second album, which should be on the streets next spring.
