Veterinarians at a tony Massachusetts animal clinic are getting an MRI machine to help better diagnose their clients' privileged pets.

Angell Animal Medical Center in Jamaica Plain is leasing a magnetic resonance imaging machine made especially for pets from Advanced Veterinary Technologies, the Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

The PC-1/80 Veterinary MRI System has a bed configured so dogs and other small animals can be held securely in place during scanning. Animals are also sedated to keep them still.

Moreover, the PC-1/80 is calibrated to take images of tissues smaller than those in humans.

Having its own on-site system should let Angell reduce the cost of an MRI procedure to about $600 from $875, not including anesthesia.
