The Philippines decided Tuesday to send additional troops to Haiti as part of the ongoing U.N. peacekeeping mission in the beleaguered Caribbean nation.
Philippines President Gloria Arroyo said she was sending 200 additional Filipino troops to the troubled nation. The Philippines has already committed nearly 150 soldiers to the 7,500-strong U.N. force led by Brazil.
Haiti was plunged into violence last year when armed rebel groups calling for the resignation of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide began taking over the country. Aristide left the country in February 2004.
