It’s the little things in life that can make one happy. I’m certainly elated over the announcement that the borough will resume pick up of yard clippings and brush for the borough compost. This is something that we here in Mount Pleasant have become accustomed to, and maybe even took for granted until, because of budget tightening, it was suspended during the summer. People in neighboring towns, who are not fortunate enough to have this service, think it is really great that we have this collection available to us. We are one of the few towns in the area that offers a town compost. The schedule for brush and clipping pick up will be every first Wednesday of the month for residents in First Ward, every second Wednesday for Second Ward and every third Wednesday for those living in the Third Ward. Have items to be picked up curbside on these dates. The compost site is also open every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. if you’d like to drop off your clippings. = A few weeks ago I was so busy patting the backs of the participants of the Million Minute Reading Challenge that was sponsored by the Mount Pleasant Library, that my mind was working faster than my fingers. The sentence that read that the library will “not” receive the $1,000 should have read it will “now” receive the $1,000. The library has been offering some wonderful programs, and it’s great to see the enthusiasm in which they’ve been received. Keep reading folks, and enjoy the library that we are so fortunate to have! = Stop out at the high school tonight at 7 and help the Viking Fans cheer on their team at the annual bonfire. This Friday will be the Vikings last home game against Laurel Highlands. = Congratulations to James “Peck” McKenna who was recently added to the Alumni Wall at the Mount Pleasant High School. McKenna was the third inductee to the wall. Previous inductees were state Rep. Jess Stairs and U.S. Rep. John Murtha. = In a betting mood• Head out to Hecla, 8 p.m. Saturday to enjoy a “Night at The Races” to be held at the Hecla Volunteer Fire Hall. Admission in only $5 and that includes refreshments and four three-digit numbers, which entitle you to four chances to win $250, based on the 7 p.m. drawing of the Pennsylvania Daily Number. You can bet on horses for an additional fee and even become an “owner” and purchase a horse for $5. For information call 724-423-4203. All proceeds go to the Hecla Volunteer Fire Department. = And since you may be in Hecla anyway, starting at 5 p.m. the Community Church of Helca will be holding its third annual “Auction Extravaganza” to benefit the Building Fund and Children’s Activities. The event will be divided into three auction types, live, silent and Chinese. Items include sports articles, pet, golf and entertainment packages, several types of certificates from various locations, and much more. Cost is only $10 a person, and that includes a generous buffet of home made food including chili, haluski, rigatoni, various appetizers and more! A chance to win a 25-inch TV and other door prizes is also included in the admission. This is a great benefit and tickets are selling fast. Call 724-542-7260 for information and tickets. = Congratulations to the Vikings girls tennis team and to coach Tony Splendore for winning the Section 1-AA Championship. Great job ladies (and coach)! = There are still a few tickets left for the 100th anniversary of the Mount Pleasant Elks banquet to be held Saturday. The dinner, which is being served home-style, consists of baked ham, homemade noodles, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, coleslaw, apple sauce, rolls and pie. The cost is only $8 for adults, $4 for kids age 5 to 12, and the little ones are free! Take-out is also available. = The Mount Pleasant Senior Center has some truly wonderful programs, and many of these programs are available with the help of fund-raisers. From 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, the center will be holding a chicken and biscuit dinner. The meal will feature chicken and biscuits, mashed potatoes, green beans, pie and beverage. Advanced tickets are $5.50 for adults and $3 for kids under age 12. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $6. The borough’s Halloween parade will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 29. What happened on this day: Did she ever really say “Let them eat cake” in referring to her starving subjects• Historians doubt it, but she did utter an apology to her executioner for stepping on his foot as Marie Antoinette, Queen of France was executed on this day in 1793. Thinking he was going to start a huge uprising and help to free neighboring slaves, John Brown leads a band of 20 men into Harpers Ferry to attempt to capture the Federal Arsenal. Col. Robert E. Lee put a stop to the raid, and captured Brown who was later hung. Finally the lucky( or unlucky depending on how you see it,) number was “158” on this day in 1940, as the lottery for the draft was started for World War II with 158 being the very first drawn. Thought for the day: “Be mild to the mild, shrew to the crafty, confiding to the honest, rough to the ruffian and a thunderbolt to the liar. But in all this, never be unmindful of your own dignity.” — John Brown. Have a great week! For comments or items to be included in future columns, reach me at www.mptownnews.com or 724-547-0785.
