Pirates come to terms with 2 draft picks
» The Pirates came to terms with two draft picks: right-handers Tyler Waldron (fifth round, Oregon State) and Vincent Payne (12th, Cypress College). The Pirates have signed eight picks.
» First it was mustaches, then high socks. On Friday, many of the players tugged on youth-sized T-shirts designed like Andrew McCutchen’s jersey. “It shows they’re together,” manager John Russell said. “Just trying to make it loose. We’ve got to be loose to be effective; you can’t play tense. They’re trying to get a little team unity and get this thing turned around. Whatever it takes.”
» Steve Pearce (sprained right ankle) doubled and walked in four plate appearances Thursday in his first rehab game with Single-A Bradenton. Pearce is expected to spend two or three more days with Bradenton, then join Triple-A Indianapolis.
» Andy LaRoche continues to take grounders at second base before batting practice. Russell said LaRoche “is getting pretty close” to being game-ready at the position. “The turn (at the base) is the thing we’re concerned with,” Russell said. “We want to make sure he’s in a good position so he won’t get hurt if guys slide into him.”
» Indianapolis manager Frank Kremblas was named a coach for the International League in the Triple-A All-Star Game on July 14.
