The Pirates signed six players to minor-league deals today, including three with experience at the major-league level.
Jake Fox, who appeared in 27 games with the Orioles last season, will receive a non-roster invitation to spring training, as will pitcher Shairon Martis and outfielder Brandon Boggs. Pitchers Kyle Cofield and Jose Diaz and infielder Stefan Welch — all career minor leaguers — also signed deals but will report to minor-league camp.
Fox, who has played all over the field, was dropped from the Orioles' 40-man roster last month and hit .246 last season. He has a .237 average in 193 games in the majors.
Martis played for the Nationals' Double-A team in 2011, last appearing in the majors in 2009, when the 24-year-old had a 5.25 ERA in 15 starts with Washington.
Boggs appeared in 101 games as a rookie with Texas in 2008, but the 28-year-old has appeared in just 29 games since. He appeared in 16 games with Milwaukee last season.
Also, the Toronto Blue Jays reclaimed catcher Brian Jeroloman off waivers from the Pirates, who had designated him for assignment Monday after claiming him Friday. And catcher Eric Fryer, who hit .269 in 10 games last season, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis.
