ATLANTA — Right-hander Charlie Morton was placed on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder fatigue. The Pirates recalled righty Steven Jackson from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Jackson will pitch out of the bullpen. The Pirates have not yet named a replacement starter for Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs. Right-hander Brad Lincoln, the club's top pitching prospect, might be called up next week to make his debut Tuesday.
Morton (1-9, 9.35) lasted just two innings in Thursday night's 8-2 loss against the Cincinnati Reds. He allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits, walked three, struck out two and balked once.
"Charlie has been battling mild shoulder discomfort and fatigue off and on for the majority of the season," geneal manager Neal Huntington said. "Until now, we felt we could work through the issue without risking additional damage. We now feel that the best way to get Charlie back on track is to give his shoulder appropriate rest and recovery time to allow him to get back to 100 percent." After Thursday's game, Morton insisted his sore shoulder was not the cause for his poor start.
"Just fatigue. It's OK," Morton said. "I don't think it's a big issue."
