Pirates prospect Lincoln has surgery
HOUSTON - Right-hander Brad Lincoln, the Pirates' first-round draft pick last year, had "Tommy John" surgery today and will be out of action for the next 10 to 12 months.
Lincoln first experienced pain in his elbow -- although he did not report it to Pirates management -- after throwing in instructional league last year. He was shut down at the start of spring training after more soreness cropped up when he threw off a mound.
Lincoln was examined yesterday by Dr. James Andrews, who conducted the reconstructive surgery in Birmingham, Ala.
"We anticipate Brad will be back sometime during the 2008 season," general manager Dave Littlefield said.
Also, reliever Dan Kolb and outfielder Luis Matos, who were released at the end of spring training, are expected to report today to Class AAA Indianapolis.
The Pirates are in discussions with the agent for infielder Jose Hernandez, but so far have not come to terms on a minor league contract. If he signs, Hernandez would be assigned to Indianapolis.
