A 22-year-old man was taken to Allegheny General Hospital for treatment on Monday because he was bitten by a pit bull that apparently pushed open the backyard gate and began attacking his family's two German shepherds in Spring Hill.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard said the man and his 52-year-old father heard the dogs barking and came out to find the pit bull attacking them. The younger man was bitten on the left hand as the men tried to fight off the pit bull, Richard said.

City Animal Control officers took possession of the pit bull, whose owner arrived to search for the dog. Richard said the pit bull owner may face citations.
