Houston pitcher Russ Springer was suspended for four games Friday after throwing several times at Barry Bonds and eventually hitting the San Francisco star earlier this week. Astros manager Phil Garner was suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball. • A two-day auction of Joe DiMaggio memorabilia kicked off yesterday with a buyer snapping up a trophy from “Joe DiMaggio Day” in 1949. The winning bid of $17,500, which included the buyer’s premium of 15 percent, also included a leather-bound album with autographs from his Yankees teammates and members of the Boston Red Sox, including brother Dom DiMaggio, and a typed note signed by Frank Sinatra. • Melvin Mora signed a three-year, $25 million extension with the Orioles yesterday that includes a no-trade clause. The deal, which concluded four months of negotiations, will enable the third baseman to keep his wife and six children in the city he’s grown to love. • New York Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano will need surgery for a bone chip above his right elbow, an injury that could finish his 2006 season before it ever started. Pavano has not pitched in the major leagues since June 27 because of a variety of injuries. • The New York Yankees put Bubba Crosby on the 15-day disabled list yesterday, the third outfielder they’ve sidelined in the last two weeks. • The Texas Rangers recalled right-hander Robinson Tejeda from Triple-A to start last night’s game at Houston and placed reliever Antonio Alfonseca on the 15-day disabled list. • The Cincinnati Reds activated third baseman Rich Aurilia from the 15-day disabled list yesterday.
