Pitt AD to talk extension with women’s coach
Pitt athletic director Jeff Long will likely meet with women’s basketball coach, Agnus Berenato, soon to discuss a possible contract extension.
“We are certainly pleased with what she has done, and not just in the win/loss column,” Long said. “Agnus has had such a huge impact on these young women. She teaches them more than Xs and Os.
“What this team has done this season is not totally unexpected, because Agnus is the type of person who does everything right, from the little things to the big things. She gets her players to believe.”
Berenato, who agreed to a seven-year deal, just finished her third season with the Panthers, leading them to the WNIT semifinals. Pitt finished with 22 wins this past season, tying the school record.
Berenato came to Pitt after 17 seasons at Georgia Tech — 15 as head coach.
Her name has been mentioned for several Division I coaching vacancies.
“I am very happy at the University of Pittsburgh,” she said. “My husband and my kids love it here. I feel like I have the best staff and a great team. We all get along, and that is what has made this work.
“I believe we can get Pittsburgh to be a nationally recognized program.”
