Pitt graduate student hit, dragged by car

A University of Pittsburgh graduate student remained in critical condition Friday night after a speeding stolen car struck her as she walked alone on an Oakland sidewalk, Pittsburgh police said. Jennifer Lynn Burroughs, 25, was trapped under the car until emergency personnel could free her, police said. She was taken to UPMC Presbyterian. "Her injuries are quite graphic," said city police Lt. Kevin Kraus. "She does have severe injuries throughout her body, but most severely, she has severe head trauma." Christopher Titus, 19, of Garfield, crashed into Burroughs at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard shortly after 9:40 p.m. Thursday, police said. Witnesses said Titus crawled out of the driver's side window and ran away. Two male passengers from Garfield, ages 19 and 15, also fled. Pitt police officers caught them nearby, Kraus said. A Port Authority of Allegheny County police officer saw Titus minutes before the crash driving a 1994 silver Chrysler New Yorker at "a high rate of speed" in a bus lane, which flows in the opposite direction of traffic, near the intersection of Fifth and Craft avenues, Kraus said. The officer turned on his emergency lights and chased the car outbound on Fifth Avenue, but could not catch up, Kraus said. After losing sight of the New Yorker, which was stolen from Highland Park on Wednesday, the officer turned off his lights but continued to search the area. Minutes later, Titus apparently lost control of the car, crashed into a mailbox, and hit Burroughs. Officials would not speculate on the car's speed. Titus was arraigned last night on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, fleeing police, receiving stolen property and car theft. He was placed in the Allegheny County Jail in lieu of a $250,000 straight cash bond. He could be charged with homicide if Burroughs dies. Titus was arrested in March on charges of receiving stolen property and driving with a suspended or revoked license, according to Allegheny County court records. He pleaded guilty to both charges in May and received 18 months of probation. The two passengers, whom police did not identify, were questioned and released, Kraus said. Burroughs' last known address is in the Crafton area. She is a student at the Katz Graduate School of Business, university officials said. "We just feel terrible about what happened," Dean John T. Delaney said. "The business school, as well as everyone else at the university, wants to be as big a help as possible. We wish her family as much comfort as possible." Dr. John Camillus, the graduate school's executive associate dean, said the university is in shock. "She is a terrific girl," he said. "We are just trying to find out what we can do to help the family." Burroughs has worked since 2004 with PPG Industries Inc., Downtown, as a technical services representative in the architectural finishes department, company officials said. "Everyone in the company is praying for her," PPG spokesman Jack Maurer said.
