The University of Pittsburgh is appealing a proposed $5,250 penalty for an attack in which a macaque monkey bit a laboratory worker, school officials announced Friday.

The federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration cited Pitt for failing to provide adequate training and safety equipment to workers, OSHA spokeswoman Leni Fortson said.

The citation stemmed from a Sept. 24 incident in which the macaque bit laboratory worker Patricia Boyle of Avalon. Boyle was hospitalized for more than a week and has undergone two surgeries.

"The university has appealed the citation and has not paid the fine," said Pitt spokesman John Fedele. "The university provided all appropriate equipment and training."
