Newsmaker: Lee Yochum
Noteworthy: Eastport, Maine, and the Navy have recognized Yochum, a sailor aboard the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio, for aiding the community during a port call there. In the wake of Hurricane Arthur, his crew battled gale winds, downed trees and pounding rain to help the city’s volunteer fire department extinguish a house fire on July 5. Authorities determined that a damaged power line overwhelmed the home’s appliances, sparking a fire that threatened nearby residences and a school. The crew later evacuated a home filled with propane gas, cleared the roads of debris and helped to reroute traffic.

Quote: “It was good to be able to fall back on the good training we receive in the Navy and help someone who needed our assistance.”
