Probation officer 1 of 2 people shot in Wilkinsburg
Police are searching for two suspects involved in a Wilkinsburg shooting Wednesday that injured two people, including an Allegheny County probation officer, authorities said.
The two victims were sitting on a porch along Marlboro Avenue when they were shot shortly before 5 p.m. by two men who then fled on foot, according to county police Superintendent Coleman McDonough.
“The suspects who came down an alley directly across the street from (the home) and began firing at the victims,” McDonough said.
Both victims were taken to local hospitals, but neither appears to have life-threatening injuries, police said.
The probation officer was on duty at the time and at least one of the victims was a resident there, McDonough said.
“(The probation officer) was responsive, walking and talking, at the time of transport,” he said.
Neighbor Colletta Ward had joked with the victims moments before the shooting while leaving her house across the street to pick up her daughter at work.
She returned to find part of her street blocked off by police tape.
“I can’t believe it — I just talked to them,” she said from the front porch of her house.
Her husband, Dennis Ward, sat on the stoop and described hearing rapid gunshots while he was in an upstairs room.
“I’d say around 10 to 12,” he said.
Gunfire isn’t a typical sound for the neighborhood.
“It’s a very quiet area,” he said.
Police believe the suspects fled on foot.
Police said the suspects are black males in their late teens or 20s. They were wearing black clothing.
The fact that they were still at-large worried Colletta Ward.
“It’s scary to see all this,” she said, while watching investigators work at the scene. “I’m going in and I’m going to lock my door and lock all my windows.”
The county Sheriff’s Office and police from Pittsburgh, Edgewood, Penn Hills, Plum and Swissvale are assisting county police in the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call the county police homicide unit at 412-473-1300.
