Santa Peduto is coming to town
Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto started growing a beard on his summer vacation, but he’s eyeing Christmas for the big reveal.
Ralph Sicuro, president of the Pittsburgh firefighters union, invited him to play Santa Claus at the fireman’s annual Christmas Party.
“I intend to do it,” Peduto said Thursday.
Peduto said he took a 10-day vacation for the first time in five years last month with ambitious plans to complete some long-overdue work around his Point Breeze home.
“I had all these great intentions of doing things like cleaning out the basement and painting the ceiling in the attic,” he said. “I didn’t do any of it. Instead I grew a beard.”
He said he also watched a lot of “The Price is Right” while lounging around home in a bathrobe.
Peduto vowed to model his beard after Pittsburgh industrialist, Henry Clay Frick. In essence: “Long enough to comb it.”
It’s not the first time the mayor has grown facial hair. He had a beard for a short time in 2014, he said, while the Penguins were contending for a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs. He also had one in 2008 while serving as a Pittsburgh councilman.
He intends to keep this one until at least Christmas.
