Education: Bachelor of science in zoology from Texas A&M University; medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. Following a residency in anesthesiology at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, he held a fellowship at the Guy's Hospital in London.
Background: Williams rejoined the University of Texas Medical School as a faculty member in 1983, rising to the position of associate professor, while serving as the director of cardiothoracic anesthesiology. In 1991, he moved to the UCLA School of Medicine, where he served as director of cardiothoracic anesthesiology and co-director of surgical intensive care medicine. Williams came to the University of Pittsburgh in 1998 as an associate professor of anesthesiology, serving first as associate chief and later, chief anesthesiologist at UPMC Presbyterian.
Noteworthy: Williams was appointed chairman of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's department of anesthesiology.
