David H. McCormick

  • Age: 37

  • Occupation: Executive with Downtown online auction firm FreeMarkets Inc.

  • Residence: Squirrel Hill

  • Family: Wife, Amy; daughter, Lilah, 2; and a baby on the way

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering, United States Military Academy at West Point; doctorate in public and international affairs, Princeton University

  • Background: McCormick has been an executive at FreeMarkets since December 1999 and most recently was vice president of worldwide operations. Previously, he was a senior executive at management consulting firm McKinsey & Co. Inc. From 1987 until 1992, McCormick served as a captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm.

  • Newsworthy: McCormick was named president of FreeMarkets last week. Upon assuming the role, he discussed his new responsibilities and his three-year stretch with a Pittsburgh technology firm that has endured the highs and lows of a turbulent economy.

  • Quote: "In terms of day-to-day activities, I'll spend more time thinking about the broader company agenda. In my previous role, my primary responsibility was for customer sales and customer service. Now, the entire day-to-day operation of the company is more my concern. That means I'll be playing a more visible role with people within the company; I'll be spending more time with them as well as spending more time with customers."
