Family: Delgado and Stefancic are husband and wife. Children, Lisa Delgado, 32; Maya Delgado, 28, and Ben Stefancic, 28.
Occupation: Delgado is the Jean Lindsley Professor of Law at the University of Colorado School of Law in Boulder, and Stefancic is a senior research associate at Colorado.
Education: Delgado has a bachelor's degree in math from the University of Washington and a law degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Stefancic has a bachelor's degree in English from Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn., and a master's degree in writing from the University of San Francisco.
Background: The couple are among America's leading writers on race. They have written "Critical White Studies: Looking Behind the Mirror," which won a Gustavus Myers Award as the outstanding book on human rights in North America in 1998. Delgado is a leader among critical race theorists, who study how the law represents power shifts among various groups in this country.
Noteworthy: The University of Pittsburgh School of Law has named Delgado the first Derrick A. Bell Fellow and Professor of Law, and Stefancic the Derrick A. Bell Scholar and Research Professor of Law. Their appointments take effect in May. Bell, a 1957 graduate of Pitt's law school, resigned from his tenured position at Harvard University to protest a lack of minority women faculty members.
Quote: "African-Americans and Latinos will begin to exceed the number of white Americans by the middle of the century so that race relations will take on a much more complex aspect," Delgado said. "The social and legal systems will have to develop new tools for understanding the issues of each of the groups of color."
